Adult and Child Cleanings

Getting a cleaning at the dentist is a common treatment that many people take advantage of. It’s suggested that these cleanings occur every 6 months in order to ensure that each patient is staying on top of their daily oral hygiene. On top of this, both children and adults have portions of their mouth that can’t easily be reached, if at all, unless cleaned by a professional. Going for long stents in between cleanings could mean cavities or other issues arising down the road.

A dental cleaning for children is a bit different than it is for adults. A child’s cleaning is conducted by a pediatric dentist. This simply means that the dentist went through the same schooling as an average dentist but, added on an extra two years, or more, of schooling that specializes in children’s dental care. This makes them specially qualified to handle children’s dentistry with the utmost care and knowledge.

Involved with a children’s cleaning is a basic exam which will check for any issues that might be occurring such as poor hygiene, gum disease, etc. After a basic exam, calculus will be removed from their teeth, a fluoride treatment applied, if needed, flossing, and polishing which removes and stains that may have been cropping up.

As with children, teeth cleanings are suggested every 6 months for adults. This is for the same reasons children are expected to visit at this rate. Adults don’t need a specialized dentist for their cleanings like children do. During a cleaning, adults will have plaque and tartar buildup removed, flossing, polishing, and sometimes, a fluoride treatment is necessary but, not always. Adults will have their gums checked as well as a basic oral exam to ensure oral hygiene is on track.
